Early Years Foundation Stage

Our Early Years leader is Miss Fletcher

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum at St Swithun’s C of E VC Primary school is based on the EYFS profile introduced in September 2012.

The EYFS focusses around four themes of the Every Child Matters Curriculum;
1. The Unique Child;
2. Positive Relationships;
3. Enabling Environments
4. Learning and Development

It is vital that children feel happy, confident and secure so they can enjoy their learning journey through school.

At St Swithun’s we believe that ‘Play is the vehicle to learning’ and so the curriculum is a play- based curriculum where the children are given plenty of opportunities to develop their own learning through play. We refer to the play as ‘Learning Choices’.

The role of the adult in the EYFS is to;
• support the play alongside the children
• observe the children’s play from a distance
• extend the learning with other resources or through modelling of new skills
• Constantly assess the children’s abilities, interests and skills. Recognising the children’s next steps.

We follow the International Primary Curriculum for our topic themes but more often than not these develop and change throughout the half term to reflect the interests of the children.

We are very lucky to have a large, well equipped outdoor environment which the children have access to throughout the day, whatever the weather. The outdoor and indoor environments enable children to develop across all strands of the EYFS profile.
